Zambia Govt gives FRA K500m to pay maize farmers

The Zambian government has released 500 million Kwacha to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) for payments to farmers who sold maize to the government. This fund has been transferred to banks for onward disbursement, with a call to expedite payments to allow farmers to purchase inputs for the upcoming season. Despite a partial drought, the FRA has successfully purchased over half a million metric tonnes of maize.

Government has released 500 million Kwacha to the Food Reserve Agency -FRA- to enable it to pay the remaining farmers that sold their maize to the Government through various FRA depots countrywide.

FRA Public Relations Coordinator JOHN CHIPANDWE has told ZNBC news that the Agency has transferred the funds to banks countrywide for onward payment to eligible farmers.

Mr. CHIPANDWE has since urged paying banks to expedite the release of funds to the remaining farmers to enable them buy farming inputs in readiness for this year’s farming season.

He says the Agency has been able to purchase more than half a million metric tonnes of maize despite the partial drought experienced.
