Zambia is going through unprecedented times, says US envoy after donating relief maize
The US government, through USAID, has donated relief maize worth K500 million to Zambia to help mitigate the effects of a severe drought. The drought has caused widespread crop losses and forced families to reduce their daily food consumption. The donation aims to support the most affected areas, particularly the Southern and Western Provinces, where crop production is expected to be under 80,000 MT, far below the projected 1.5 million MT.
US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales says the US government stands with the people of Zambia as they manage and mitigate the drought effects. And Vice-President Mutale Nalumango says the 2023/2024 crop forecasting survey revealed that the drought-affected Southern and Western Provinces of Zambia can produce under 80,000 MT of the projected 1.5 million MT.
