14 LMT sugar quota fixed for first fortnight of October 2026
The Food Ministry fixed the domestic sugar sales quota at 14 lakh metric tonnes for the first fortnight of October 2026 (covering October 1 to October 15), up from 13 LMT in the first fortnight of September. This fortnightly allocation mechanism replaces the previous monthly quota system to regulate domestic availability and curb price fluctuations.
New Delhi: The Food Ministry on October 30 has fixed the domestic sugar sales quota at 14 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for the first fortnight of October 2026.
This is the third quota announced by the government after taking decision to allocate fortnightly quota from existing monthly quota system.
The quota will be applicable from October 1 to October 15, 2026, according to the latest allocation.
For first fortnight of September, the quota allocated for sugar mills was 13 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) while for the second fortnight, it was 13.50 LMT.
In October 2025, the government had allocated a monthly sugar quota of 24 LMT for domestic sale. while in October 2024, the sugar quota released for sale was 25.5 LMT. For September 2025, the allocated sugar quota was 23.5 LMT.
For August 2026, the government had allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22.50 LMT, the same as the allocation for August 2025. The quota for July 2026 was fixed at 22 LMT.
The fortnightly allocation for October comes as the government continues to regulate sugar availability in the domestic market through periodic sales quotas.
The quota mechanism is aimed at ensuring adequate sugar availability and preventing sharp fluctuations in domestic prices. Market conditions and demand will remain key factors in determining sugar prices during September.
