Chikkodi: Tractors transporting sugarcane to Maharashtra set on fire after sugar factories delay payments to farmers

Chikkodi: Two tractors transporting sugarcane to Maharashtra from Belagavi were set on fire near Karadga village in the Belagavi district. Farmers protesting against sugarcane factors in Maharashtra allegedly set tractors on fire for delaying payment for sugarcane they supplied to factories, Tv9 Kannada reported.

The tractors were transporting sugarcane from Nej village in Chikkodi Taluk to a sugar factory located at Hapari in Maharashtra. Around 15 miscreants allegedly set the tractors on fire when they were en route to Maharastra via Rendal Road on Tuesday night.

Farmers from Maharashtra reportedly have stopped supplying sugarcane and are protesting against sugar factories after payments for their produce were delayed. Farmers are protesting under the leadership of farmer leader Raju Shetty demanding payments, Tv9 Kannada reported. Maharashtra farmers were reportedly upset after sugar factories started purchasing sugarcane from farmers in Belagavi.

The tractors destroyed in the fire belonged to a person named Amith Bojkar from Maharashtra. Bojkar has registered a complaint at the Sadalga Police Station. An investigation is underway into the matter.
