Biofuels share of UK transport mix at 6.8pc: DfT
A total of 3.33bn litres equivalent of renewable fuels were supplied in the UK for 2022. Of this, 3.32bn l were verified and a total of 5.5bn Renewable Fuel Transport Certificates (RTFC) were issued, including 4.36bn from double-counting feedstocks listed in Annex IX Part B of the recast RED II.
Greenhouse gas (GHG) savings were at 82pc, or 7.2mn t of CO2e compared with conventional fuel.
Biodiesel accounted for 45pc of the verified renewable fuels, of which 75pc was produced from used cooking oil (UCO). Hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) made up 8pc. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) accounted for 1pc, for which a total of 48mn l were supplied in 2022, but 307mn l have been supplied so far in 2023. Biomethanol made up 2pc of the verified fuel.
Ethanol made up 37pc of verified renewable fuel in 2022, up from 24pc in 2021, following the introduction of E10 — a biofuel made up of 90pc regular unleaded and 10pc ethanol — at the end of 2021, which led to a shift towards more non-waste-based feedstocks. Some 49pc of ethanol was produced from corn.
Around 17.9mn l equivalent of so-called development diesel and 10.2mn l equivalent of development gasoline were supplied. Organic municipal solid waste from the US made up 87pc of development diesel and 81pc of development gasoline, while 16pc came from end-of-life tyres and the remaining 3pc from food waste.
