Decision to be made on mill location
The Fiji Sugar Corporation hasn’t decided where the new sugar refinery and ethanol mill in Rakiraki will be located, says chairman Nitya Reddy following the advertisement of the sale of the old mill site in a recent tender released by the company.
“At this stage no decisions have been made about the final location of any new plant,” Mr Reddy said.
“In all likelihood it will be at the same premises. The current mill compound sits on about 18 acres of flat valuable land, which is far more than what we need for our new plans.
“It is the most valuable part of our Penang land portfolio and we believe that it lends itself to multiple commercial opportunities, without in any way interfering with our long-term plans.”
Mr Reddy said the site’s exposure to floods, given its location next to a river, would have to be considered.
“We are simply exploring the various options and the values these assets represent.”
