Viruses group found in Hry rice nursery
Prof. B R Kamboj, Vice-chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), disclosed the presence of spinareoviridae virus group in rice nurseries across Haryana. The affected plants exhibit dwarfing and abnormal greenness. HAU scientists have identified and are monitoring these viruses, stressing that early detection and intervention can mitigate crop losses. This follows their initial report of a mysterious paddy disease in 2022, prompting ongoing surveillance and testing of suspected samples.
Hisar: Vice-chancellor, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (HAU), Prof B R Kamboj has said spinareoviridae virus group was being observed in rice nurseries at many places in Haryana. Affected plants are dwarfed or more green than normal, said the VC. “University scientists have decoded the viruses present in the nurseries in Haryana.
Infection on a smaller scale and timely steps taken can avoid crop losses. Laboratory analysis of samples collected from different locations of Haryana has revealed the presence of dwarfing viruses. A team of experts is regularly monitoring the paddy crop and suspected samples are being tested,” said Prof Kamboj. HAU scientists had reported a mysterious disease in the paddy crop for the first time during the year 2022, due to which the plants remained dwarf.
