NLC India Ltd plans to establish pilot-scale project in Neyveli to produce green hydrogen

NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL) is set to launch a pilot project in Neyveli for green hydrogen production, powered by 4 MW of solar energy, as part of the Green Hydrogen Mission. Chairman Prasanna Kumar Motupalli announced the initiative during the 78th Independence Day event, highlighting NLCIL’s goals of adding 20 GW of power capacity and achieving 100 MTPA in mining by 2030. He also detailed plans for coal-based power plants in Odisha and renewable projects in Rajasthan and Gujarat, along with an expansion of Neyveli’s Thermal Power Station-II.

NLC India Ltd. (NLCIL) is preparing to launch a pilot-scale project in Neyveli for green hydrogen production, aligning with the country’s Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative will use 4 MW of solar energy to power the electrolyser, underscoring NLCIL’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, as announced by Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLCIL, on Thursday, reported The Hindu.

Speaking at the 78th Independence Day event held at the NLCIL Bharathi stadium, Mr. Motupalli expressed confidence in achieving the company’s ambitious goals: adding 20 GW of power generation capacity and reaching 100 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) in mining capacity by 2030. During the event, he also honored Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding his statue on the premises.

Mr. Motupalli highlighted NLCIL’s significant achievements, including a Profit After Tax of ₹566.69 crore, reflecting a 37.02% increase from the previous year. He detailed the company’s long-term plans, which include developing coal-based power plants in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur districts of Odisha, and pursuing renewable energy projects in Rajasthan (810 MW) and Khavada, Gujarat (600 MW).

Additionally, Mr. Motupalli announced the planned expansion of the Thermal Power Station-II in Neyveli. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd. (RVUNL) to form a joint venture for a 500 MW lignite-based power plant and a 2000 MW solar power plant.
