South Korea aims to ensure all departing international flights use mix of sustainable aviation fuel from 2027

South Korea announced plans to mandate a 1% blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for all international flights departing from the country starting in 2027. This initiative, unveiled by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) mandatory carbon offsetting and reduction scheme.

South Korea announced on Friday that it plans to ensure that all international flights departing from the country will use a blend containing about 1% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) starting in 2027.

On Friday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport unveiled a plan to ensure that all departing international flights use a 1 percent blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) starting in 2027. This plan aligns with the implementation of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) mandatory carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation, which will apply to member states from that year.

The new SAF initiative began with Korean Air’s KE719 flight on the Incheon-Haneda route on Friday, marking the first use of domestic SAF on a passenger aircraft. This milestone makes South Korea the 20th country worldwide to provide ICAO-certified SAF.

SAF-blended fuel will be used on this route until July 2025. For the first six months, the SAF will be supplied by S-Oil, and for the latter half of the year, SAF from SK Energy will be used. Both types of SAF are ICAO-certified.
