Tamil Nadu: US’s Ohmium to set up green hydrogen unit with 400 crore investment in Chengalpattu district
Ohmium, an American renewable energy company, will invest Rs 400 crore to set up a manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, creating around 500 jobs. The unit will focus on producing electrolyzers and green hydrogen, contributing to global green energy initiatives. This investment was secured during Chief Minister MK Stalin’s visit to the US, where additional MoUs totaling Rs 900 crore were signed with six international companies, projected to create 4,100 jobs in Tamil Nadu.
American renewable energy company Ohmium will invest Rs 400 crore to establish a manufacturing unit in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. The facility is expected to create approximately 500 jobs. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this investment was signed in San Francisco on Sunday, during Chief Minister MK Stalin’s two-week visit to the US aimed at attracting investment.
Ohmium specializes in designing and manufacturing green hydrogen production systems and scalable Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. The Chengalpattu unit will focus on manufacturing electrolyzers and green hydrogen, adding to Ohmium’s global green hydrogen initiatives in the US, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.
Chief Minister Stalin, on his X handle, hailed the MoU signing as a major achievement in San Francisco. He noted, “This represents a significant advance in developing the green energy production ecosystem and promoting a sustainable future!”
An official release indicated that during an investors’ conference in San Francisco on August 29, Tamil Nadu signed MoUs with six international companies—Nokia, PayPal, Yield Engineering Systems, Microchip Technology, Infinx Healthcare, and Applied Materials—for a combined investment of Rs 900 crore. These investments are projected to generate 4,100 jobs across Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.
