IOC plans 1 per cent sustainable aviation fuel blending by July-September 2025
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plans to reach a 1% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend in jet fuel by Q3 2025, ahead of India’s 2027 goal. Additionally, IOC aims to establish dedicated SAF plants as part of India’s broader push towards sustainable fuels. India also targets a 20% ethanol blend in petrol by 2025-26.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plans to achieve at least 1% sustainable aviation fuel in jet fuel by July-September 2025, two years ahead of the government’s target, reported Argus Media.
Alok Sharma IOC’s director of research and development-made a statement at the India Refining Summit on 23rd October, indicating that IOC also aims to establish dedicated SAF plants.
India’s broader target is to achieve 1% SAF in jet fuel for international flights by 2027, with an increase to 2% by 2028.
As refinery expansions continue, IOC’s focus is on boosting jet fuel production, anticipating an increase in demand, Sharma noted.
In addition to SAF, ethanol is set to play a growing role in India’s energy landscape, with discussions around a 5% ethanol blend in diesel, according to Sharma. India’s ethanol blending rate in petrol reached 13.8% from November 2023 to September 2024 and rose to 15.9% in September 2024. India aims to achieve a 20% ethanol blend in petrol by 2025-26 aiming to reduce reliance on crude imports.
