Japan’s higher rice costs push up prices of ‘gyudon,’ other food items
Record-high rice prices in Japan are driving up food costs. Sukiya, a popular gyudon chain, will raise prices by up to 50 yen, marking its second hike this year. Tendon Tenya and Nichirei Foods are also increasing prices for tempura bowls and frozen items. Rising rice costs are impacting affordability across the food sector.
Record-high rice prices in Japan are making “gyudon” beef bowls and other dishes and food products more expensive.
The operator of the Sukiya restaurant chain says it will raise prices of its gyudon items by up to 50 yen, or about 32 cents, from Friday.
Zensho Holdings cites higher-priced rice supplies.
The regular-sized gyudon dish will be 450 yen, up by about 20 yen. The extra-large version will go up by 50 yen to 830 yen. This will be Sukiya’s second round of price-rises this year.
The average price of this season’s newly harvested rice has risen to the highest level on record.
The added expense led restaurant-chain operator Royal Holdings to raise prices of tempura rice bowls and set meals at its Tendon Tenya chain this month.
Nichirei Foods plans to hike prices of stir-fried rice and other frozen items by up to 30 percent in February.
