Kuki-Zos of Manipur’s hill areas being provided free rice since June last yr: FCI
Rice is being transported regularly to the Kuki-Zo people in Manipur’s hill areas via Mizoram, bypassing Imphal due to ethnic clashes. About 1.80 lakh quintals of rice have been delivered to Churachandpur since June 2023 through Mizoram, with allotments varying between 9,000 to 20,000 quintals. This effort, initiated by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, ensures food supply despite disruptions caused by tensions in the Imphal valley.
Aizawl: The beleaguered Kuki-Zo people living in the hill areas of Manipur have been provided rice regularly without any break since June last year via Mizoram, Food Corporation of India’s divisional manager Zodinpuii Ralte said Wednesday.Ralte told TOI foodgrain is being lifted from the lone Bairabi railway station in Kolasib district bordering Assam and brought to Churachandpur town through Mizoram. “The rice consignment for Churachandpur varies from 9,000 quintals to 20,000 quintals as per the allotment received from the ministry,” she said, adding that it can also increase or decrease depending on the stock in the warehouses.
She said about 1.80 lakh quintals of rice have already been lifted to Churachandpur from Bairabi railway station since June last year with 20 to 30 truckloads passing through Mizoram to deliver the consignment whenever allotments are made. The intiative was undertaken at the behest of the ministry of consumer affairs, food & public distribution. Tribal-inhabited areas in southern Manipur could not receive food supply from Imphal valley since the ethnic clashes broke out in May last year. Though foodgrain is being transported to Jiribam district of Manipur besides Churachandpur from Assam, rice could not be supplied to Churachandpur and nearby tribal districts as the highway passes through capital Imphal city dominated by the majority Meitei community.
