Farmers of Nallamaram panchayat near Peraiyur in Madurai district, demanding compensation for their crops which have been destroyed due to various reasons, submitted a petition to Collector M.S. Sangeetha here on Monday. K. Balasubramanian, one of the petitioners, said farmers in areas near Peraiyur such as N. Muthulingapuram, N. Meenakshipuram, N. Kottanipatti, who have raised maize crops on several acres were facing losses owing to scanty rainfall and minimal irrigation sources.
Earlier this year, due to the stunted growth of the crops, farmers had to destroy and sow seeds again. In the second time too, the crops’ growth got affected due to attack of worms and insects. Despite using pesticides on the crops, the worms could not be destroyed, he said. As a last resort, chemicals were used; but that too has not yielded the desired results due to which the crops are on the verge of getting damaged again. Due to scanty rains and storage in waterbodies, water for irrigation was scarce this year, he said. The farmers demanded the agriculture officials to inspect the damaged crops and provide them with appropriate compensation.
