Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association urges government to bring down recovery rate from 10.25% to 9.5%

Sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu are urging the government to increase the procurement price and reduce the recovery rate from 10.25% to 9.5% due to rising farming costs, including labor and fuel. The farmers, facing challenges like the closure of state-owned mills, expressed concerns over the declining area under sugarcane cultivation. They requested a monitoring committee for fair revenue distribution and better support.

Sugarcane farmers, set to harvest their crop this month, are urging the government to increase the procurement price of sugarcane due to escalating farming costs. They have also requested the government to reduce the recovery rate from 10.25% to 9.5%.

According to the farmers, these costs—driven by higher prices for labor and fuel—have impacted sugarcane cultivation. They also expressed concern over the closure of state-owned sugar mills. These factors have pushed many farmers to switch to other crops, which offer comparatively lower yields and profits, they stated.

Reiterating the farmers’ recent request to Chairman of Commission of Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) Vijay Paul Sharma during a meeting in Chennai, N. Palanisamy, State president, Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association, said they requested the Union government to bring down recovery rate from 10.25% to 9.5%.

He added that the Centre’s decision to set the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane for the 2024-2025 season at ₹340 per quintal, based on a sugar recovery rate of 10.25%, would only discourage farmers from cultivating the crop further.

Palanisamy also highlighted the significant decline in sugarcane cultivation in Tamil Nadu, pointing out that the area under sugarcane has decreased rapidly, despite the state’s provision of ₹645 crore as an incentive.

He said that both state and central governments should not only raise the procurement price but also set up a monitoring committee to ensure equitable revenue distribution from sugarcane processing.
