Maharashtra: 156 sugar mills start sugarcane crushing operations

As of December 9, 2024, 156 sugar mills in Maharashtra have crushed 146.23 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 11.54 lakh tonnes of sugar with an average recovery rate of 7.89%. Kolhapur leads with the highest recovery rate at 9.17%, followed by Pune at 7.96%. Solapur ranks third in crushing volume, while Ahmednagar has a better recovery rate than Solapur. Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar follow, with Amravati trailing with two operational mills. The industry shows significant progress as the 2024-25 season advances.

As the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season progresses in Maharashtra, more sugar mills are beginning operations. According to the commissionerate office, by December 9, 156 sugar mills have commenced crushing operations in the state, and a total of 146.23 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 115.42 lakh quintals (11.54 lakh tonnes) of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate in the state is 7.89%.

In the Pune division, 37.69 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, producing 30.01 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 7.96%. A total of 27 mills are operational in the region, including 15 cooperative mills and 12 private mills.

Meanwhile, the Kolhapur division has 34 mills in operation, consisting of 22 cooperative mills and 12 private mills. The region has crushed 33.22 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 30.45 lakh quintals of sugar, with the highest recovery rate in the state at 9.17%.

Solapur ranks third in sugarcane crushing, with 29 mills, including 12 cooperative mills and 17 private mills, in operation. The region has crushed 25.37 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 17.71 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 6.98%.

The Ahmednagar division ranks fourth, with 20 mills in operation, including 12 cooperative mills and 8 private mills. These mills have crushed 18.9 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 13.84 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.32%, higher than that of Solapur.

The Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in terms of crushing. In Nanded, 26 mills, including 8 cooperative mills and 18 private mills, have crushed 16.92 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 13.6 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 8.04%. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 17 mills, including 9 cooperative mills and 8 private mills, have crushed 12.55 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 8.64 lakh quintals of sugar.

In the Amravati division, two sugar mills have commenced operations, one cooperative and one private. The division has produced 1.17 lakh quintals of sugar by crushing 1.56 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.
