Grain ethanol manufacturers appeal for release of promised incentives
Grain ethanol manufacturers have urged India’s Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) to expedite promised incentives for Dedicated Ethanol Plants (DEPs). The Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA) highlighted delays in disbursing funds under schemes like NABARD’s Interest Subvention and state-specific incentives. GEMA President Dr. C.K. Jain stressed timely support is crucial for sustaining the nascent industry and attracting investments in non-traditional ethanol-producing states.
As the Ethanol Supply Year 2024-25 progresses, grain ethanol manufacturers are urging the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) to take steps to release the promised incentives to the eligible Dedicated Ethanol Plants (DEPs) across India.
Under India’s biofuel policy, various incentives have been offered by the central and state governments, including the Interest Subvention Scheme (ISS) through NABARD and state-specific incentives in regions such as Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
In a letter addressed to the DFPD, the Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association (GEMA) has called on the department to urge the relevant agencies to release the promised incentives. The same letter was also shared with Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi.
In the letter, GEMA stated, “As you are aware, the nascent industry of grain ethanol manufacturers requires support for survival. Many incentives have been promised by the central and state governments to attract investments under the biofuel policy. As the nodal agency for the biofuel program, we request you to kindly urge the relevant agencies to release the promised incentives to the eligible DEPs.”
Dr. C.K. Jain, President of GEMA, said, “To attract investments, states announced lucrative incentives to set up dedicated ethanol plants. Basing viability on these incentive schemes, investors have set up plants in states beyond those with natural opportunities for grain ethanol production. GEMA urges the DFPD, as the nodal agency for the biofuel policy, to press the states and NABARD for the timely disbursement of the promised incentives to the entitled units.”
