West Champaran: A state-level sugarcane farmers’ conference was organized by the Bihar government on Friday at the Valmiki Auditorium in Bagaha. The event aimed to address challenges faced by sugarcane farmers, especially regarding the timely issuance of challan slips and payments. The conference focused on increasing sugarcane production and finding solutions to farmers’ concerns. Bihar’s Sugarcane Industry Minister, Krishnanandan Paswan, attended the event, reports Zee News.

A heated exchange took place during the conference between BJP MLA Ram Singh and officials from Harinagar Sugar Mill. The argument centered on problems faced by farmers, particularly delays in getting challan slips and payments. MLA Ram Singh accused the mill officials of neglecting farmers’ concerns and treating them unfairly.

“If the officials do not even answer my calls, one can only imagine how they treat ordinary farmers,” he said, criticizing the lack of communication between mill authorities and farmers.

Seeing the rising tension, Sugarcane Industry Minister Krishnanandan Paswan intervened to settle the dispute. He reassured farmers that the government was committed to increasing sugarcane production and ensuring they received their payments on time.

During the event, the minister made a key announcement that all varieties of sugarcane would now be purchased free of cost, bringing relief to farmers. He also declared that free procurement of sugarcane would begin at the Tirupati Sugar Mill gate in Bagaha, a step aimed at benefiting local farmers.

The conference also featured a cultural performance by tribal women from Tharuhat, who welcomed guests with a traditional Jhamta Jhumar dance. The performance highlighted the region’s cultural heritage and added a festive touch to the event.

During the conference, Ramkumar alias Chhote Srivastava, Bihar state secretary of the Eekh Kashtkar Sangh, thanked Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for the recent increase in sugarcane prices. He said the price hike would help improve the financial situation of farmers.

Senior officials, including the Joint Cane Commissioner and managers from Harinagar and Bagaha sugar mills, were present at the conference. The event was seen as a step toward improving coordination between farmers and sugar mill management.

The conference concluded with decisions aimed at improving the sugarcane industry in Bihar. Minister Paswan assured farmers that the government would continue working to support them and ensure they received fair compensation for their produce.
