Haryana farmers demand Rs 600 sugarcane price, announce statewide protests from November 12
Haryana sugarcane farmers’ unions announced statewide protests from November 12, rejecting the government’s ₹15 per quintal hike to ₹430 for 2026-27. They are demanding ₹600 per quintal, with tractor rallies planned across seven locations and warnings of further agitation, including a January harvesting boycott.
Chandigarh: Sugarcane farmers’ unions in Haryana have announced statewide protests from November 12, demanding a higher price for sugarcane after the state government increased the rate by only Rs 15 per quintal for the 2026–27 season, Hindustan Times reported.
The Haryana government has fixed the sugarcane price at Rs 430 per quintal for the 2026–27 season and Rs 450 per quintal for 2027–28. However, farmers’ unions have rejected the decision, calling it a betrayal of sugarcane growers. They are demanding a price of Rs 600 per quintal from the current season.
The unions argue that while the prices of products made from sugarcane are increasing, farmers are not receiving a fair share of the returns.
The decision to launch an indefinite agitation was taken at a farmers’ meeting held at Manglora village in Karnal district on Friday under the banner of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). The meeting was chaired by farmer leader Jaswinder Manglora.
Ratan Mann, an SKM member and Haryana president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), said farmers unanimously decided to intensify their agitation until the government agreed to increase the sugarcane price.
BKU spokesperson Surendra Sangwan said tractor rallies would be organised outside sugar mills in Sonepat, Karnal, Yamunanagar, Naraingarh, Jind, Rohtak and Indri between November 12 and 27 as the first phase of the protest.
He warned that if the government failed to revise the price, farmers would surround the Chief Minister’s residence in Kurukshetra on December 2. A farmers’ meeting would also be organised there.
Mann said farmers were suffering losses while the sugar and ethanol industries were earning profits. He pointed out that farmers were receiving Rs 4.15 per kg for sugarcane, while the price of sugar had increased to Rs 70 per kg. He said the situation was forcing farmers to move away from sugarcane cultivation.
Jaswinder Manglora said sugarcane was a year-round crop for farmers, but the current price was not sufficient to make cultivation profitable. He added that the cost of fertilisers, seeds, pesticides, diesel, labour and irrigation was continuously rising.
According to Manglora, farmers spend between Rs 80,000 and Rs 90,000 per acre on sugarcane cultivation, while the price announced by the government does not even cover their production costs.
Meanwhile, farmers associated with the BKU (Charuni) held a meeting at Jat Dharamshala in Kurukshetra on Thursday. Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni said the organisation would hold a rally on December 15 to press for its demand to increase the sugarcane price to Rs 600 per quintal.
He further announced that farmers would stop harvesting sugarcane from January 2, 2027, if their demand was not accepted.
