Himachal CM to lay stone of state’s first green hydrogen plant in Nalagarh today
Himachal Pradesh will establish its first green hydrogen plant at Nalagarh, Solan, with an investment of ₹9.04 crore. The 1 MW plant will produce 423 kg of green hydrogen daily, aiming for completion in 18 months. This initiative supports the state’s goal of becoming India’s first green energy state by 2026, reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.
Himachal Pradesh is set to establish its first green hydrogen plant at Nalagarh in Solan district. The plant will be constructed with an investment of Rs 9.04 crore and will have the capacity to produce 423 kg of green hydrogen daily.
The project aims to be completed within 18 months. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu will lay the foundation stone for the 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Dabhota, Nalagarh, on Wednesday.
Aiming to become India’s first green energy state by 2026
A state government spokesperson revealed that CM Sukhu has set a target to make Himachal Pradesh the first green energy state in India by March 2026.
As part of this vision, the CM will lay the foundation stone for Himachal’s first large-scale green hydrogen project on February 5 in the state’s largest industrial region Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh.
For the 1 MW green hydrogen plant in Dabhota, the state government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with All India Limited on April 26, 2023. This agreement focuses on the development of solar energy, green hydrogen, geothermal energy, and compressed biogas.
Expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
A total of 4,000 square meters of land has been allocated for this project. The plant will utilise electricity from renewable energy sources to produce hydrogen.
It is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, contributing to a cleaner energy ecosystem. The plant will have an annual production capacity of approximately 1,54,395 kg of green hydrogen.
CM Sukhu said that the government was working towards achieving a target of 500 MW of solar energy through innovative and decisive solutions. The state’s largest solar energy project, with a capacity of 32 MW, is already operational at Pekhubela in Una district.
Statewide initiatives for a green future
To achieve the goal of making Himachal a fully green state, various projects are underway. Solar parks with a combined capacity of 501 MW and solar energy projects totalling 212 MW will be established in Una, Kangra, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi and Shimla districts.
The Chief Minister emphasised that these initiatives reflect the state government’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. These efforts will not only make Himachal Pradesh the first green energy state in the country but also set an exemplary model for the nation.
Benefits of green hydrogen plant for Himachal
The green hydrogen plant will offer significant environmental benefits, primarily through a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, as no fossil fuels are used in the production process. This positions green hydrogen as a key player in combating climate change and reducing air pollution.
Green hydrogen can be produced through the electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources or biomass. Additionally, green hydrogen and biomass serve as feedstock for renewable carbon green methanol. This will aid in reducing pollution levels across Himachal Pradesh.
