Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh is supporting sugarcane farmers by developing 243 high-yielding sugarcane varieties aimed at boosting their income and promoting greater prosperity. The initiative aims to increase farmers’ income and strengthen the agricultural economy.
The state’s efforts are transforming sugarcane cultivation into a more rewarding business. The Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Research Council has been instrumental in creating new varieties that can withstand changing weather conditions and resist diseases, leading to a substantial increase in farmers’ earnings.
“We are seeing a real difference in our fields and our wallets,” said one farmer from the region. “The new types of sugarcane are healthier and give us a much bigger harvest.”
Under the Chief Minister’s guidance, sugarcane committees throughout the state are also being strengthened to offer farmers timely advice and technical help. Over the past decade, Uttar Pradesh has successfully developed a wide array of sugarcane varieties suited to various local climates. Currently, 59 key varieties are thriving, including 28 that mature early and 31 that mature in the middle to late season.
These varieties have played a crucial role in delivering higher yields and better returns for farmers. In total, 243 high-performing sugarcane varieties have been developed to date.
Another major benefit for farmers comes from a large seed nursery, spanning over 267 hectares. This nursery provides farmers with certified, disease-free seeds, which is helping to improve the overall quality of their crops. The newly developed varieties are also showing strong resistance to common pests and diseases. These recent improvements have led to less crop damage, lower costs for farmers, and increased profits, directly benefiting millions of sugarcane farmers across Uttar Pradesh.
“Getting these high-quality, disease-free seeds has been a game-changer for us,” another farmer commented. “It means less worry about our crops and more money in our pockets.”
The sugarcane committees continue to play a vital role in ensuring farmers receive timely payments and access to essential resources like seeds, fertilizers, training, and technical support.
