Assam : In a 1st, Majuli ships off 267MT red rice to Dubai and Russia


Assam’s Majuli district marked a major milestone by exporting 267 metric tonnes of organic red rice (bao dhan) to Dubai and Russia — its first-ever international shipment. The initiative, flagged off by local officials, highlights Majuli’s sustainable farming and the global appeal of its nutrient-rich, antioxidant-packed indigenous rice. More exports are planned soon.
Dibrugarh: The riverine district of Majuli achieved a historic milestone on Friday as it flagged off its first-ever export shipment of red rice, locally known as ‘bao dhan’, to international markets in Dubai and Russia.The 267-metric tonne consignment represents a significant breakthrough for Assam’s indigenous agricultural sector and sustainable farming practices.The ceremonial flag-off was conducted by Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam in the presence of DC Ratul Chandra Pathak, SSP Bibekananda Das, and senior officials from the agriculture department. The premium rice variety will be exported by IVC Agrovet Pvt Ltd, marking the beginning of what officials hope will be a regular export trade for the region.”The export of organically produced red rice from Majuli to Central Asia and Europe is a historic occasion. This initiative not only boosts the livelihoods of local farmers but also positions Assam’s indigenous crops in the international market,” said MLA Bhuban Gam during the flag-off ceremony. Red rice, a premium indigenous variety from Assam, has gained recognition for its distinctive rich aroma, exceptional nutritional value, and organic cultivation methods.
The grain stands out in the global market due to its unique characteristics and health benefits, making it an attractive export commodity.The nutritional profile of red rice makes it particularly appealing to health-conscious consumers worldwide. The variety serves as an excellent source of iron, protein, vitamins, and fibre. What sets it apart is its rich concentration of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, which give the rice its distinctive red colour and contribute to its health benefits. Medical experts have highlighted various health advantages associated with red rice consumption, including improved digestion, anaemia management, and potential benefits for asthma treatment, bone health, weight management, and cardiovascular wellness.
These health benefits align with growing global trends toward nutritious and functional foods.This export milestone comes at a time when global demand for organic and indigenous food varieties is steadily increasing. The versatility of red rice adds to its market appeal, as it can be used in both sweet and savoury dishes. The grain has been a staple in Assamese cuisine for generations and is traditionally enjoyed as part of authentic regional meals, giving it a cultural significance alongside its nutritional value.”The export of 267 metric tons of bao rice — a traditional aromatic variety cultivated through completely organic processes — highlights Majuli’s potential in sustainable farming and global trade. Majuli’s farmers have preserved traditional organic methods for centuries. Now, the world is recognising the value of their produce.
