Pakistan Sugar prices remain high nationwide despite official rates

Sugar prices remain high across Pakistan, frustrating consumers who are unable to find the commodity at government-set rates. Despite official directives for retail sales at Rs173/kg, prices range from Rs180 to Rs200/kg nationwide. Disputes between dealers and mills and limited enforcement are worsening availability and driving illegal profiteering.

Sugar prices across Pakistan have not come down, causing frustration among the public. Citizens are struggling to find sugar at the government-set rates.

In Hyderabad, sugar is being sold for Rs190 to Rs200 per kilogram. In Karachi’s retail markets, prices range between Rs180 and Rs190 per kilogram. People in Quetta and Peshawar also face similar rates, with sugar not available below Rs180 per kilogram.

In Lahore, the situation is further complicated due to an ongoing dispute between sugar dealers and sugar mill owners. As a result, sugar is unavailable at many shops in the city. Dealers claim that mill owners are refusing to sell sugar at the official ex-mill price of Rs165 per kilogram.

To control the situation, a crackdown on profiteering was carried out in Karachi. During the operation, authorities sealed seven shops and arrested two sellers for overcharging. Fines totaling Rs1.077 million were also imposed.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued clear instructions for strict implementation of the official prices. He directed that sugar must be sold at Rs165 per kilogram at the ex-mill level and Rs173 at retail. The Prime Minister warned that anyone found violating the pricing agreement or selling sugar at inflated rates would face strict legal action.
