Pakistan : Sargodha sugar mills release 53000 tons to stabilize prices


Sargodha: In a bid to stabilize sugar prices and prevent hoarding, four local mills have released 53,000 MT of sugar under DC Capt (R) Muhammad Waseem’s directive. Ex-mill rates are set at Rs 165/kg, with retail at Rs 173/kg. Officials are enforcing pricing rules, addressing overpricing complaints, and urging citizens to avoid panic buying.
In a major step to ensure the steady availability of sugar and curb artificial inflation, four sugar mills in Sargodha have collectively released 53,000 metric tons of sugar into the market.
According to a spokesperson for the district administration, the initiative was carried out under special instructions from Deputy Commissioner Capt (R) Muhammad Waseem. The move aims to prevent stockpiling, maintain stable prices, and offer financial relief to the public.
As per the breakdown, Noon Sugar Mills released 19,000 MT, Unicol Sugar Mills and SW Sugar Mills each provided 12,000 MT, while Al-Arabia Sugar Mills supplied 10,000 MT. All mills reportedly hold sufficient reserves and are ensuring uninterrupted daily supply.
The spokesperson confirmed that sugar is being distributed at an ex-mill rate of Rs 165 per kilogram, while retail prices in Sargodha and nearby areas remain steady at Rs 173 per kilogram.
Citizens have been urged not to believe misleading information or engage in panic buying. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of responsible purchasing to avoid shortages and ensure fair distribution at regulated prices.
To maintain strict oversight, price control magistrates have been instructed to stay vigilant. On Sunday, 13 complaints related to overpricing were addressed, resulting in legal action against 12 retailers and one wholesaler. One shopkeeper was arrested, and a total of Rs 120,000 in fines was imposed.
Additionally, the DC directed that market monitoring continue on Sundays and that officials strictly enforce pricing regulations for sugar and other basic necessities.
