573 sugar mills registered on NSWS portal: Minister

A total of 573 sugar mills are registered on the NSWS portal, with 534 operational and 39 closed in 2024–25, Union Minister Nimuben Bambhaniya informed Lok Sabha. Maharashtra accounts for 18 closures, Tamil Nadu 6, and Andhra Pradesh 4. The Centre clarified sugar mill setup is deregulated since 1998.

Currently, a total of 573 sugar mills are registered on the NSWS portal, out of which 534 sugar mills are operational and 39 are closed during the 2024–25 sugar season, Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Nimuben Bambhaniya, informed the Lok Sabha.

The state-wise details of the 39 closed sugar mills are as follows:

While replying to a question regarding Madhya Pradesh, she informed that, as per the Government of Madhya Pradesh, a total of six sugar mills have been closed down in the last 15 years, out of which five are not registered on the NSWS portal.

While elaborating the answer she said, “The Central Government does not set up sugar mill in any part of the country. Further, sugar industry was deleted from list of industries required compulsory licensing, vide press note dated 31.08.1998. After that any entrepreneur is free to set up sugar mill in any part of the country as per provisions laid down in clause 6A to 6E of Sugarcane (Control), Order as amended from time to time.”

“As per information received from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, they have not received any application for the formation of a committee to establish a sugar mill in the cooperative sector,” Minister further added.
