Bangladesh: Rice prices rise in Dhaka as traders blame higher transport costs
Rice prices increased in Dhaka markets over the past week as higher fuel costs, transport charges, paddy prices and seasonal factors raised expenses. Atash rice reached Tk 63–65 per kg, Miniket Tk 75 and Paijam Tk 60, while coarse rice, edible oil, sugar and eggs remained stable.
Prices of several varieties of rice have increased in Dhaka markets over the past week, with traders attributing the rise to higher transport costs, increased paddy prices and seasonal factors.
Prices of tomatoes and green chillies also remain high, although some vegetables have become cheaper. The prices of edible oil, sugar and eggs have remained stable.
A visit to several markets in the capital on Friday found that Atash rice was selling for Tk 63-65 a kilogram, compared with Tk 62-63 a week ago. Miniket rice rose by Tk 2 to Tk 75 a kilogram, while Paijam rice increased from Tk 58 to Tk 60 a kilogram.
The prices of coarse rice varieties, however, remained unchanged. Guti Swarna and other coarse varieties were selling for Tk 50-55 a kilogram.
Traders said higher fuel prices had increased truck fares and transportation costs, adding to the pressure on rice prices. They also cited higher paddy prices and seasonal factors as contributing to the increase over the past week in Dhaka and several other districts.
Chishti, a rice trader at Malibagh market, said the rise in fuel prices had pushed up truck fares, increasing the cost of transporting rice to markets. He said the prices of some varieties had increased by Tk 50-100 a sack.
Vegetable prices showed mixed trends. Brinjal was selling for Tk 70-80 a kilogram, beans for Tk 120-160, tomatoes for Tk 120, and pointed gourd and okra for Tk 50-60. Green chillies were selling for Tk 120 a kilogram.
Papaya prices, meanwhile, had fallen considerably to Tk 20 a kilogram.
Vegetable trader Enamul Haque said prices of most vegetables had not increased significantly, with only a few items remaining expensive. He said prices could fall further when fresh winter vegetables arrived in the markets.
In the poultry and meat markets, Sonali chicken was selling for Tk 330 a kilogram, while broiler chicken cost Tk 180-190. Beef was selling for Tk 820-850 a kilogram.
Prices of edible oil, sugar and eggs remained stable during the week, according to the market observations.
Fish prices varied by variety. Rohu was selling for Tk 280-350 a kilogram, climbing perch for Tk 240, pangas for Tk 230 and pabda for Tk 350.
