India Partners with World Food Programme to Supply Fortified Rice, Fight Global Hunger

India signed a Letter of Intent with the World Food Programme to supply fortified rice for humanitarian aid worldwide. The Department of Food and Public Distribution will provide rice to support crisis-hit populations, strengthening global food security and highlighting India’s growing role in humanitarian efforts. The deal builds on wider cooperation initiatives.
India and World Food Programme (WFP) have taken a significant step towards addressing global hunger by signing a Letter of Intent (LoI) on Monday, August 25, 2025. The agreement will enable WFP to source fortified rice from India to meet the food and nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in crisis-affected regions across the world.
Under the partnership, Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) will supply fortified rice to WFP, which will be distributed through the UN agency’s humanitarian aid programmes. Officials said the initiative not only strengthens global food security but also highlights India’s expanding role as a key partner in humanitarian assistance.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to global solidarity, Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary of DFPD, said the country stands by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world is one family, and believes in sharing resources to support those in need. He added that India’s humanitarian contributions reflect its vision of collective responsibility for a sustainable and secure future.
WFP welcomed the collaboration, stressing its importance at a time when food insecurity is rising globally amid constrained humanitarian funding. “We deeply appreciate India’s steadfast commitment to fostering a food-secure and peaceful world,” said Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of WFP. He described the agreement as a meaningful step in strengthening international efforts to fight hunger and ensure consistent support for vulnerable populations.
The development follows discussions held earlier this year at a WFP Executive Board side event in Rome, where both sides explored new avenues for cooperation. LoI is expected to help create a dependable supply chain of food grains for humanitarian distribution during emergencies.
In addition to fortified rice supply, both parties reviewed ongoing collaborations, including the rollout of fortified rice under government schemes, Annapurti devices (grain ATMs), Jan Poshan Kendras, supply chain optimisation, smart warehousing solutions, and mobile storage units. These initiatives are designed to modernise food distribution systems and ensure nutrition reaches the last mile.
