India, Japan to expand cooperation on biofuels and advanced technologies in energy sector

India and Japan have agreed to expand energy cooperation in carbon capture, green chemicals, biofuels, and advanced technologies during their ministerial Energy Dialogue. Under the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership, both nations reaffirmed commitments to energy security, clean transition, and inclusive growth, aiming to build resilient, sustainable Indo-Pacific energy systems.

India and Japan have agreed to broaden their cooperation in areas such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), green chemicals, biofuels, and advanced technologies in the energy sector. This understanding was reached during a ministerial-level India-Japan Energy Dialogue held on Monday via video conferencing. The dialogue was co-chaired by India’s Minister of Power, Manohar Lal, and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Muto Yoji.

The two countries have been strengthening their collaboration in the energy sector under the framework of the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership, focusing on energy security, clean energy transition, and climate change mitigation, according to a statement from the Ministry of Power.

This cooperation has been formalised through the India-Japan Energy Dialogue and several sector-specific Joint Working Groups (JWGs). Representatives from India’s ministries of power, new and renewable energy, oil, and coal presented detailed updates on the progress made under their respective JWGs and discussed future directions for collaboration.

The Ministers from India and Japan:

  • Reaffirmed commitment to Energy Security & Inclusive growth.
  • Welcomed progress in areas like Energy efficiency clean hydrogen, ammonia, renewable energy.
  • Agreed to expand cooperation on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage green chemicals, biofuels, and advanced technologies in Energy Sector.

The ministers also underlined that the India-Japan energy partnership will continue to play a critical role in promoting secure, resilient, and sustainable energy systems across the Indo-Pacific region.
