Patna: The Bihar cabinet has approved two sugar mill projects with a combined investment of Rs 422.5 crore in East Champaran district, a move expected to provide a local market for sugarcane farmers and create jobs in the region.

A Rs 180 crore sugar mill and distillery project proposed by Kolkata-based Shree Ganesh Sugar Mills Private Limited has been approved for Chorma in Pakridayal block, in the Madhuban assembly constituency, Prabhat Khabar reported.

The project will include a sugar mill with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes of cane crushed per day (TCD) and a distillery. The plant is expected to give farmers in Madhuban and nearby areas a local outlet for their sugarcane and encourage cultivation of the crop.

The cabinet has also approved a Rs 242.5 crore sugar mill project by Rajshree Sugars at Kanjahiya Tola in Kotwa block.

The project will include a 5,000 TCD sugar mill, a 28 MW co-generation plant and a 60 kilolitres per day (KLPD) distillery.

The two projects are expected to generate thousands of jobs for local residents and benefit sugarcane growers in Madhuban, Chiraiya, Motihari Sadar and nearby Sheohar, as well as farmers in Nepal’s Terai region.

Madhuban legislator Rana Randhir said he had been working to bring an industry to the area that would provide a direct market for farmers and employment opportunities for local youth.

He welcomed the cabinet’s approval and thanked the state government and Chief Minister for clearing the project.

Administrative work for implementing the projects has begun, with the investments expected to support the rural economy and increase opportunities for sugarcane farmers in the region.
