The process of constructing a new sugar mill in Rakiraki has begun.

Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh said this is part of Government efforts to revive the industry.

He said the Government’s vision is to restore the industry to its former strength by increasing production and introducing modern farming solutions.

“We are working to revive this vital industry and bring it back to what it used to be,” said Mr Singh.

“The Government is committed to supporting farmers and ensuring the sustainability of sugar.”

Meanwhile, Mr Singh was in Sabeto on Friday last weekto hand over pre-season burnt cane rehabilitation grants to affected farmers.

He reiterated the Government’s assurance of addressing the industry’s ongoing challenge such as the labour shortage through overseas recruitment and mechanisation.

“Initiatives such as tractor service providers and the introduction of fertiliser applicators are already in place, with specialised harvesters for hilly terrain to be introduced soon,” he said.

Mr Singh said several government grants and assistance programs are available to support farmers to increase production and adopt modern practices.
