Karnataka sugarcane farmers threaten fresh agitation from Tuesday over MSP, FRP, SAP demands
Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka have threatened to resume their agitation from Tuesday if the October 26 meeting in Belagavi fails to deliver concrete decisions on revised sugar MSP, FRP and SAP. Farmers expect assurances from the Union and State governments before the crushing season begins.
Sugarcane farmers in Karnataka have warned of restarting their agitation from Tuesday if the Union and State governments fail to announce decisions on their key demands, including revisions to sugar Minimum Selling Price (MSP), Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) and State Advised Price (SAP), by Monday, The Hindu reported.
The farmers have agreed to participate in a meeting convened by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar at Suvarna Soudha in Belagavi on October 26, where Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, government officials, sugar factory owners and farmers are expected to discuss the issues.
Chunappa Pujeri, president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, said farmers would press both governments to announce revised MSP, FRP and SAP ahead of the commencement of the crushing season. He said they expect concrete decisions to be communicated at the Belagavi meeting.
Pujeri said farmers had temporarily suspended their agitation following appeals from Joshi, Shivakumar and other leaders, who had requested time for a Central government panel to examine the situation and submit its recommendations.
However, farmers are unwilling to wait until the panel completes its exercise and have sought immediate assurances from the governments. Pujeri warned that the agitation would resume from Tuesday if the October 26 meeting failed to produce concrete announcements on their demands.
