Pakistan : Punjab govt, flour mills agree to restore supply at fixed rates

Punjab struck a deal with flour mill owners to restore wheat flour supply, reopening 800 mills from today. The government will provide 100,000 tons monthly, while multinationals may add 2.5 million bags at Rs 3,000/maund. Officials expect market stabilization, regulated prices, and consumer relief after weeks of shortages.

The Punjab government has successfully reached an agreement with flour mill owners to restore the supply of wheat flour across the province, easing concerns over the ongoing shortage. Mill owners have agreed to resume operations under certain conditions, ensuring that flour will be made available to the public at regulated prices.

According to sources, around 800 flour mills in Punjab will reopen starting today, supplying both 10-kg and 20-kg flour bags in the market at government-approved rates. This development is expected to bring much-needed relief to consumers who have been facing difficulties due to reduced availability of flour in recent weeks.

As part of the arrangement, the government will provide 100,000 tons of wheat every month to flour mills to maintain a steady supply chain. In addition, multinational companies have expressed their willingness to contribute by supplying 2.5 million bags of wheat at a fixed price of Rs 3,000 per maund. A meeting between representatives of multinational companies and the Director General of Food has been scheduled to finalize the distribution procedures and supply quantities.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Price Control, Salmi Butt, stated that both the government and mill owners are working closely to draft effective recommendations for resolving the wheat flour crisis. She added that the mills have shown readiness to cooperate fully with the authorities, and their suggestions are being seriously considered. The immediate resumption of flour supply, she said, will not only stabilize the market but also prevent any further surge in wheat and flour prices.
