Indian edible oil industry aims for self-sufficiency amid policy shift

The Indian Vegetable Oil Processors’ Association (IVPA) stresses self-sufficiency amid declining imports and global trade pressures. Following PM Modi’s call for domestic production, IVPA prioritizes fair MSPs, price stability, and innovation. Leadership under Sukhakkar Desai aims to modernize the sector, reduce import dependence, and strengthen resilience against global market fluctuations.
The Indian Vegetable Oil Processors’ Association (IVPA) emphasizes the critical importance of achieving self-sufficiency in the vegetable oil sector in response to declining imports and global trade challenges. This initiative resonates with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement in August 2025, when, in response to the US imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods, he called on the country to produce everything it needs domestically—from fertilizers to electric vehicles. The IVPA represents a key segment of the Indian edible oil processing industry, where global price volatility for palm and soybean oils combines with challenges from free trade agreements and domestic policy.
The industry faces the challenge of balancing farmer support and price stability, especially in the face of competition from other important crops such as pulses, rice, and wheat. The IVPA emphasizes the priority of ensuring fair minimum support prices (MSPs) for producers, combating edible oil inflation, and maintaining food price stability. These measures are critical to mitigating the impact of global fluctuations on the domestic market.
Following the 48th Annual General Meeting, Sukhakkar Desai was re-elected as IVPA President, leading efforts toward self-sufficiency. With imports stabilizing, the need for innovation is growing to enable the industry to address challenges. Desai emphasizes the sector’s readiness for change, noting that self-sufficiency will not only reduce dependence on imports but also strengthen resilience to external shocks.
IVPA Vice Presidents V. J. Kumar Jain, Amrendra Mishra, Bhavna Shah, and Dhritiman Biswas continue their work coordinating modernization initiatives. The association plans to intensify lobbying for government support, including subsidies for processing and research into new oilseed varieties adapted to the Indian climate.
This self-sufficiency strategy could become a model for other agricultural sectors in India, where the balance between imports and domestic production determines food security. IVPA calls on the government to implement comprehensive reforms that will stimulate investment in the sector and ensure sustainable growth despite global uncertainties.
