Indonesia : Prabowo reviews sugar-to-bioethanol project to boost energy security
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reviewed an integrated sugarcane-to-bioethanol project in East Java, highlighting sugar, bioethanol and fertilizer production. The Air Force oversees plantations expected to produce 18.386 million tonnes of cane, supporting 45.05% of Indonesia’s 2026 sugar production target.
Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto reviewed sugarcane production and processing, including its conversion into bioethanol, while attending a harvest at Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang District, East Java, on Friday.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi informed that Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base serves as a model of integrated sugarcane ecosystem development from upstream to downstream.
The sugarcane used for bioethanol is sourced from plantations managed by the Indonesian Air Force, including those within Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base, while the processing is carried out by PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara (SGN) and Pertamina NRE.
“Abdulrachman Saleh Air Force Base in Malang serves as an example of integrated sugarcane ecosystem development. Besides sugar production, sugarcane is also processed into bioethanol, environmentally friendly fuel, organic fertilizer, and various value-added industrial products for energy security and the national industry,” Hadi remarked.
During the visit, President Prabowo also reviewed food crop production, assisted by the Indonesian Army for rice, the Indonesian Navy for soybeans, and the Indonesian Air Force for sugarcane.
According to Hadi, Prabowo also inspected downstream sugarcane products, including sugar and bioethanol, which were exhibited at the event location.
He outlined that from January to June 2026, the Army’s assistance covered 6.26 million hectares of rice fields, producing approximately 19.2 million tons of rice, or 55.24 percent of the 2026 national rice production target.
In the soybean sector, the Navy assisted 2,432 hectares of land with a potential production of 3,676 tons.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Air Force is oversees sugarcane plantations with a potential production of 18.386 million tons, equivalent to approximately 1.36 million tons of sugar, or 45.05 percent of the 2026 national sugar production target.
Hadi said the government is confident that food self-sufficiency can be achieved through collaboration among the military, ministries and agencies, regional governments, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), businesses, academia, and farmers.
“This collaboration is expected to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen downstream industries, create jobs, and improve public welfare,” he said.
