Brazil’s sugar production in 2025-26 season expected to rise to 41.42 million tonnes: Datagro

Brazil’s center-south sugar production is projected to rise 3.1% to 41.42 million tonnes in 2025–26, as more cane (52.1%) is directed to sugar rather than ethanol. For 2026–27, output could reach 43.2 million tonnes, supported by expanded planting and processing, though weather and leftover “bisada” cane will affect final yields.

Brazil’s sugar production in the key center-south region is projected to increase by 3.1 per cent in the 2025-2026 season, reaching 41.42 million metric tonnes, according to Plinio Nastari, president of the agribusiness consultancy Datagro, speaking on Tuesday.

This growth is anticipated despite a slight decline in sugarcane processing, as a higher percentage of the cane is expected to be allocated to sugar production rather than ethanol. The share of cane used for sugar is forecast to rise to 52.1%, up from 48.1% in the previous season.

Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 crop year (April 2026 to March 2027), Datagro estimates sugar production in the center-south region will reach 43.2 million metric tonnes. This represents an increase of around 4% compared to the current season, driven by a projected rise in sugarcane processing, according to Nastari, who made the comments at an industry event in São Paulo, reported Reuters.

“We expect the 2026-27 sugarcane crop to be around 625 million tonnes, but it could range between 605 million and 640 million tons,” Nastari said, noting that weather conditions will play a key role in determining the final numbers.

The current sugarcane crop is expected to reach 607.38 million tonnes. However, expectations for “bisada” cane, leftover raw material from the previous harvest, are low for the 2026-27 season, due to weather disruptions and wildfires impacting the 2025-26 harvest.

Nastari also pointed out that the second third of the upcoming harvest should benefit from favorable conditions, but the final third will depend on rainfall in April. He also highlighted that farmers are expanding their sugarcane planting areas.

For the 2026-27 season, the sugar production forecast assumes that 52% of cane will be allocated to sugar, consistent with current trends.
