Bangladesh to import 12,500 MT sugar ahead of Ramadan

Bangladesh has approved the import of sugar ahead of Ramadan to stabilise prices and ensure adequate supply. The Ministry of Commerce will import sugar from Baygalata Danismanlik Hizmetleri A.S., Istanbul, at Tk 94.94 per kg, costing Tk 78.26 crore. The country imports 97% of its annual 20 lakh tonnes sugar demand.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Advisers’ Council Committee on Government Purchase held today at the Bangladesh Secretariat, with Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed in the chair.

According to the approved proposal, the sugar will be imported by the Ministry of Commerce from Baygalata Danismanlik Hizmetleri A S, Istanbul, at a total cost of Tk 78.26 crore, with the per-kilogram price set at Tk 94.94.

“The government has decided to import sugar because Ramadan is approaching,” said Dr Salehuddin after the meeting.

He added that the move aims to keep the sugar market stable and ensure adequate supply for consumers during the fasting month.

Bangladesh’s annual demand for sugar is around 20 lakh tonnes but the sugar mills in operation are capable of producing about 2 lakh tonnes. The country meets 97% of its annual sugar demand through imports.
