Thailand approves 1 mln tons duty-free US corn Iiport quota
Thailand’s Cabinet approved raising the U.S. corn import quota from 54,700 to 1 million tons for February–June 2026, cutting tariffs to zero. Importers must buy three parts local corn for every part imported. The move ensures livestock feed supply while safeguarding farmers and maintaining market stability.
On Tuesday, November 12, 2025, Thailand’s Cabinet approved a significant increase in the quota for U.S. corn imports, raising it from 54,700 tons to 1 million tons for the period from February to June 2026 and reducing the tariff from 20% to zero. Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated that the decision is part of ongoing trade negotiations with the U.S., while emphasizing that the government aims to minimize the impact on local farmers.
To protect domestic producers, a “3:1 rule” has been introduced, requiring importers to purchase three parts of local corn for every one part imported. The limited import window is also intended to prevent downward pressure on local corn prices.
Thailand consumes about 9 million tons of corn annually, of which 4–5 million tons are imported. The expanded quota aims to ensure sufficient feedstock for the country’s livestock industry, as domestic production alone cannot fully meet demand.
In addition to corn, the Cabinet approved soybean meal imports from 11 suppliers for 2026–2028 with a 2% tariff. This measure is designed to support animal feed availability and strengthen domestic market stability.
Officials highlighted that these actions balance the need for imported raw materials for the feed industry with protection for local farmers and price stability in the domestic market.
