Poultry industry seeks government nod to allow import of GM maize to ease pressure 

India’s ₹3-lakh crore poultry industry, hit by rising maize prices due to strong ethanol-sector demand, is urging the government to permit GM maize imports. With maize output at 42 mt and ethanol needing 12–15 mt, IPEMA warns soaring feed costs threaten poultry production and sector competitiveness.

.“Of the country’s estimated annual production of 42 million tonnes of maize, the ethanol industry requires about 12-15 million tonnes, while the poultry industry consumes about 25 million tonnes. The demand from the ethanol industry is resulting in a sharp increase in the maize prices, increasing the cost of production,” Uday Singh Bayas, President of the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA), told businessline.
