Quality of Russian wheat is higher than last year – expert
The quality of Russia’s 2025 wheat harvest has improved compared with last year, with 78% classified as food-grade versus 77% in 2024. Third-class wheat rose to 30.5%, while lower grades declined. Total output reached 73 million tons, including 28 million tons with 12.5% protein and 6.3 million tons of strong wheat.
The quality of Russian wheat of the 2025 harvest is higher than last year. This was stated by Inna Zaichenko, First Deputy Director of the Federal Center for Safety and Quality Assessment of Agro-Industrial Products, Interfax reported.
According to her, this was shown by the results of state monitoring conducted in 67 regions of Russia.
“This is not a summary of analytical data; this is the result of tests of samples taken directly in the fields, these are the most accurate figures at the time of harvest. Samples were taken from 70 million tons, which is 81% of the harvested grain,” the expert said.
Zaichenko noted that the indicators may improve after post-harvest cleaning -after removing impurities and small or broken grains.
“According to the conducted research, the share of 3rd class wheat at the beginning of November amounted to 30.5% compared with 29% a year earlier. This is a positive signal indicating an improvement in the quality of wheat intended for food production. The increase, naturally, occurred due to a decrease in the share of 4th and 5th class wheat. The share of 4th class wheat decreased to 47.3% from 48% in 2024, and the share of 5th class -to 22% from 23%, respectively. There is a small amount of 1st and 2nd class wheat,” she added.
Overall, the share of food-grade wheat this year is 78% compared with 77% a year earlier.
“In terms of total output, there is positive dynamics: production of this wheat increased to 73 million tons. Growth in the share of wheat with 12.5% protein to 28 million tons also indicates an improvement in wheat quality. Strong wheat was identified at 7%, which in terms of gross harvest is 6.3 million tons. In 2024, the share of this wheat was 5% (4.1 million tons),” Zaichenko emphasized.
