Canada harvests record wheat and canola crops
Canada’s wheat harvest hit a record 40 million tonnes in 2025, up 11%, while rapeseed reached 21.8 million tonnes, up 13%. Strong yields in the Prairies, supported by late-season rains, boosted production of wheat, canola and pulses. Eastern provinces saw lower yields due to heat and limited rainfall.
Canada’s gross wheat harvest this year reached a record 40.0 million tonnes, up 11% from last year. Rapeseed production also set a record at 21.8 million tonnes, exceeding last year’s level by 13%. This was reported by Zerno On-Line, citing Statistics Canada. These record figures were achieved thanks to good yields in the Canadian Prairies.
Statistics Canada estimates spring soft wheat production at 29.3 million tonnes (up 10% from 2024), and durum wheat at 7.1 million tonnes (up 12% from 2024).
Weather conditions in the Canadian Prairies were somewhat variable during the 2025 growing season. Drought was observed in early summer, but timely rainfall at the end of the growing season significantly improved the situation. Improved growing conditions resulted in record yields and production for several crops grown primarily in the Prairies (wheat, canola, barley, oats, peas, and lentils). Harvesting progress in the Prairies was roughly average, with harvest largely completed by mid-October.
In Canada’s eastern provinces, precipitation was generally below average. Combined with the summer heat, these conditions reduced yields in many areas. As in the Prairies, harvesting conditions were generally good, and the harvest was completed on time.
