Egypt Achieves Self-Sufficiency in Sugar

Egypt achieved sugar self-sufficiency in 2025 through expanded acreage and higher yields, Supply Minister Sherif Farouk said. Local wheat procurement rose 17% to over four million tonnes. With continued growth, Egypt aims to meet subsidized bread wheat demand domestically, strengthening food security and reducing import dependence over coming years ahead.

Egypt achieved self-sufficiency in sugar in 2025, as part of a comprehensive strategy to boost domestic production, Egyptian Minister of Supply Sherif Farouk said on Sunday.

Farouk explained that the achievement came through an integrated plan focused on expanding cultivated areas, improving productivity, and supporting local production of both sugarcane and sugar beet.

The minister also noted a significant increase in locally supplied wheat during the 2025 season, which rose by 17% year-on-year to more than four million tonnes.

Egypt’s total wheat consumption for the production of subsidized bread stands at around nine million tonnes annually, with the remaining quantities currently covered through imports.

Farouk said that if current growth rates in domestic wheat procurement are maintained annually, Egypt aims to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat used for subsidized bread production from local output.

He added that the government has set an ambitious plan to expand wheat cultivation, alongside other strategic crops, as part of broader efforts to strengthen food security and reduce reliance on imports.

The announcement comes as Egypt continues to prioritize agricultural expansion and productivity improvements amid global supply chain pressures and rising food costs.
