Iraq’s wheat stock sufficient to cover a full year of flour needs
Iraq holds about 4.2 million tons of wheat, sufficient to cover a full year of flour needs under the public ration system. Authorities say reserves ensure food security, deny aid exports for now, and may sell surplus wheat domestically or export to neighbors amid record production levels.
Iraq’s wheat reserves stand at around 4.2 million tons, the Iraqi General Company for Grain Trading reported on Monday, noting that this amount is enough to meet the country’s annual flour requirements under the public food ration system.
Company Director General Haider Nouri Al-Karaawi said the current wheat stock ensures citizens’ flour supplies for a full year and will not be affected by any potential financial crisis, emphasizing the company’s “ability to manage emergencies.”
Al-Karaawi highlighted that Iraq’s strategic wheat reserves provide a food security buffer, allowing the state to respond to potential crises with stability and confidence. He also denied circulating reports suggesting that Iraqi wheat might be sent as aid to Syria or Lebanon, stressing that the issue is currently suspended.
The Cabinet has approved the sale of surplus local wheat at 420,000 Iraqi dinars per ton (approximately $323) and has not ruled out the possibility of exporting wheat to neighboring countries if official purchase offers are received from Iran, Jordan, or other regional states.
Earlier, Iraq’s Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Jabr, stated that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in key crops and has begun exporting agricultural products abroad for the first time. According to official data, wheat production totaled 5.3 million tons in 2023, over 6 million tons in 2024, and more than 5 million tons in 2025, marking a record in Iraq’s agricultural history.
