Haryana : Karnal sugar mill to get compressed biogas plant
Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill is set to get a compressed biogas plant under a PPP model, converting press mud into clean energy. The initiative supports circular economy goals while boosting mill revenues alongside ongoing sugar production and 18 MW cogeneration power exports.
The Haryana State Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited is set to establish compressed biogas (CBG) plants at various sugar mills across the state. One such plant will be set up at the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill under a public–private partnership (PPP) model.
The proposed CBG plant will generate clean energy using press mud produced at the sugar mill, thereby promoting a sustainable and circular economy by converting waste by-products into renewable energy, said Aditi, Managing Director of the Karnal Cooperative Sugar Mill.
She said the tendering process for the project was currently underway at the headquarters level. “We are hopeful that the mill will be allotted the plant,” she added.
Sharing details of the ongoing 2025–26 crushing season, Aditi said the mill had crushed 18.29 lakh quintals of sugarcane so far. The current recovery stands at 9.10 per cent, while the to-date recovery is 9.29 per cent. The mill has produced 1.60 lakh quintals of refined sugar till date.
She further stated that the 18 MW cogeneration plant installed at the mill has generated a total of 2.185 crore kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity so far. Of this, 1.41 crore units were exported to the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), earning the mill an additional net revenue of Rs 8.97 crore.
On payments to farmers, the Managing Director said the mill had already disbursed Rs 63 crore for sugarcane supplied up to January 15. This accounts for 83.40 per cent of the total cane payment due so far, the highest among all sugar mills in the state.
She also highlighted welfare measures for farmers supplying sugarcane to the mill. Under the Atal Kisan Canteen initiative, farmers are being provided wholesome meals at a nominal cost of Rs 10. A modern rest house with boarding and lodging facilities has also been arranged for farmers’ stay
