Egypt’s wheat reserves sufficient for four months ahead of Ramadan

Egypt holds 4.5 million tons of strategic wheat reserves—enough for four months—according to the Federation of Egyptian Industries. Backed by domestic output and imports via the General Authority for Supply Commodities, stocks are set to rise ahead of Ramadan, ensuring stable nationwide flour supplies.

CAIRO – 16 February 2026: Hussein Bodi, Head of the Mill Owners Association and Vice President of the Grain Industry Chamber of the Federation of Egyptian Industries, confirmed that the country’s strategic wheat reserves are secure and sufficient for four months, totaling approximately 4.5 million tons.

In statements reported by the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) on Monday, Bodi said the current reserves consist of contracted quantities through the General Authority for Supply Commodities, in addition to imports and domestic production.

He noted that local wheat production has reached around 3.5 million tons, alongside contracts to import approximately one million tons. The total stock is expected to rise to nearly 5 million tons with the start of the local wheat procurement season in mid-April, which will continue until mid-July 2026.

Bodi stressed that current reserves not only meet but exceed market needs, particularly amid preparations for the holy month of Ramadan. He added that about 24,000 tons of wheat are supplied daily to 154 mills employing roughly 30,000 workers nationwide.

According to Bodi, total annual wheat supply, both domestically produced and imported, amounts to approximately 9 million tons, underscoring the stability of the country’s grain supply chain.
