Maharashtra sugar season 2025-26: 20 mills closed, output reaches 89 lakh tonnes

Maharashtra’s 2025–26 sugar season is nearing completion, with 20 mills already shut. Of 210 operational mills, 89.84 lakh tonnes of sugar have been produced from 960.79 lakh tonnes of cane at 9.35% recovery, according to the state Sugar Commissioner’s office, with focus on timely farmer payments.

Kolhapur: Maharashtra’s sugar season is entering its final stage, with mills gearing up to conclude crushing operations. According to data from the state sugar commissioner’s office, as of February 15, a total of 20 sugar mills have closed their crushing operations.

The latest crushing report shows that 210 sugar mills participated in the 2025-26 season, including 103 from the cooperative sector and 107 from the private sector. These mills have produced 89.84 lakh tonnes of sugar by processing 960.79 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, achieving an average recovery rate of 9.35%.

In comparison, the sugar output in the 2024-25 season was 85 lakh tonnes, with an average recovery of 9.5%. During the 2023-24 season, the state recorded a sugar output of 110 lakh tonnes.

“We are collecting data on the sugar mills currently operating in the state,” said an official from the sugar commissionerate. “Instructions have been issued to ensure that mills clear farmers’ cane bills on time,” he added.
