Russia and Iran discuss large-scale wheat supplies under food security program
Russia and Iran are advancing a joint food security plan focused on large-scale Russian wheat supplies to ensure stable grain availability for Iran. The partnership could strengthen Russia’s presence in Middle East markets, but ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region may add uncertainty and potential volatility to global grain trade dynamics.
Russia and Iran have prepared a joint food security program that provides for significant volumes of Russian wheat supplies to Iran. This was announced by Russia’s Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov during a meeting of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between the two countries in Tehran, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
According to the minister, the parties have already established a joint working group to develop the details of implementing the program. He specified that a key element of the cooperation will be large-scale wheat shipments from Russia aimed at strengthening Iran’s food security amid global challenges and instability in world agricultural markets.
Russia is one of the world’s largest wheat exporters, while Iran remains a major grain importer due to limited domestic resources and unstable domestic production. Deeper cooperation between the countries could strengthen Russia’s position in the Middle Eastern market while ensuring Iran stable supplies of strategically important raw materials.
At the same time, the geopolitical situation surrounding Iran remains tense. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering the possibility of a large-scale military operation against Iran if diplomatic efforts regarding its nuclear program fail. The United States has already increased its military presence in the region and could act jointly with Israel. A potential escalation could significantly affect the balance of power in the Middle East as well as global grain markets.
