ESY 2025–26: Ethanol supplies at 328 crore litres till February
India supplied about 328 crore litres of ethanol to oil marketing companies by February 28 under the 2025–26 ethanol supply year, achieving around 31% of the contracted volume. Grain-based distilleries led supplies with 209 crore litres, with maize emerging as the largest contributor, followed by ethanol from surplus FCI grains and molasses-based feedstocks.
As on 28th February, both the molasses-based distilleries and grain-based distilleries have supplied about 328 crore litres of ethanol to the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).
Sources suggest that grain-based distilleries together accounted for approx. 209 crore litres of ethanol, contributing about 27% of the contracted quantity during the period.
Among the grain sources:
- Maize is the single largest contributor to ethanol production in the grain basket, supplying about 123 crore litres, accounting for 26% of its contracted volume.
- Surplus FCI Grain (SFG) supplied about 69 crore litres, representing 30% of the contracted quantity.
- Damaged food grains (DFG) contributed about 17 crore litres, achieving about 31% of the contracted supply.
Ethanol produced from molasses-based feedstocks is about 119 crore litres, achieving 41% of the contracted quantity.
- Sugarcane juice (SCJ) contributed about 94 crore litres, achieving 57% of its contracted volume.
- B-heavy molasses (BHM) supplied about 21 crore litres, reaching 19% of the contracted supply.
- C-heavy molasses (CHM) supplied about 4 crore litres, accounting for 29% of the contracted volume.
Against a contracted quantity of 1,058 crore litres for ESY 2025–26, the total ethanol supplied till February stood at around 328 crore litres, representing around 31% of the contracted volume.
