Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills closing operations due to lower cane production
Sugar mills in Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh are ending the crushing season up to a month early due to lower sugarcane supply. Officials said mills received about 25 lakh quintals less cane this year, mainly due to adverse weather, forcing factories to shut operations earlier than usual.
Shamali: Sugar mills in the district are winding up operations earlier than usual this year as lower sugarcane production has reduced supply to factories, Hindustan reported.
The crushing season is set to end 15 days to nearly a month ahead of last year, with mills beginning to shut due to a lack of cane. The Unn sugar mill stopped operations on Monday night after 9 pm, while the Thanabhavan sugar mill is expected to close around March 26. The Shamli sugar mill is likely to continue until April 15.
Officials said mills have received around 25 lakh quintals less cane compared to the previous season. The shortfall has been linked to adverse weather conditions, which affected crop output and reduced availability for crushing.
Earlier, mills had planned to close even sooner. Thanabhavan sugar mill had issued a notice for closure around March 20, and Unn sugar mill had indicated a similar timeline. Shamli sugar mill had initially expected to shut in the first week of April.
However, recent rainfall disrupted harvesting activities, delaying the supply of cane to mills. As a result, the crushing season was extended by a few days.
Mill representative Sukhbir Singh confirmed that the Unn sugar mill ceased operations on Monday night. District cane officer Rajesh Kushwaha said the Thanabhavan sugar mill is likely to close around March 26.
Authorities said the reduced cane production this season has led to an early closure of mills across the district.
