Punjab : Patiala district gears up for wheat procurement starting April 1

Wheat procurement in Punjab will begin on April 1, with district authorities in Patiala completing preparations for storage, transport and market facilities. Officials expect about 9.13 lakh metric tonnes of wheat arrivals this season, with 108 markets and 89 temporary purchase centres set up to ensure smooth procurement for farmers.

Patiala: Government procurement of wheat is set to begin April 1 in Punjab and a meeting in this regard was held on Tuesday at the district administrative complex in Patiala to review preparations for wheat handling, including storage, transportation, labour and other arrangements in the district’s markets.The meeting was chaired by deputy commissioner Varjit Walia and attended by all SDMs, officials of procurement agencies, commission agents, transporters and labour contractors. Walia said the district administration had completed comprehensive arrangements for wheat procurement during the current harvest season. He added that agriculture was the backbone of Punjab and that the responsibility of crop procurement rested heavily on their shoulders. He said the entire district administration would carry out the process to ensure smooth operations in the markets for wheat procurement.The deputy commissioner said procurement agencies were allocated 108 markets in the district and that 89 temporary purchase centres would also be established.

He said procurement agencies purchased 9.21 lakh metric tonnes of wheat last season, and that an estimated 9.13 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was expected to arrive in the markets this time. He said arrangements were being made in the markets for cleanliness, drinking water, restrooms, lighting and security.Walia also instructed officials of the food and civil supplies department, district mandi officers, secretaries of market committees, transport department officials and heads of procurement agencies to ensure there was no negligence in the arrangements, as chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was personally overseeing the procurement arrangements. He directed the SDMs to personally visit the markets and review the arrangements.The DC said weighing scales and moisture metres should be in proper working condition and that arrangements for tarpaulins and crates should be adequate. He said staff of procurement agencies and other relevant officials should be present at their stations during the procurement season. He also appealed to the farmers to bring their crops to the markets only after drying and cleaning them to ensure they received the appropriate price without any issues.District food supply controller Ravinder Kaur informed the deputy commissioner that arrangements for labour, cartage and transportation in all markets were in final stages, and that procurement agencies also arranged the necessary storage bags.
