Uttar Pradesh : Many sugar mills likely to stop operations by end of March
Several sugar mills in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh are expected to end the crushing season by late March or early April due to lower sugarcane production. Mills have started open weighing of cane at gates and procurement centres to maximise crushing and ensure all available sugarcane is processed before shutdown.
Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh): This year, the crushing season of several sugar mills in the district is expected to come to an end by the last days of March. Some mills may continue operations into the first week of April, while one or two mills are likely to run until April 15.
According to a report published in Amar Ujala, sugar mills are shutting earlier than usual due to lower sugarcane production. To ensure maximum cane procurement and crushing, Bilai Sugar Mill has started open weighing (without slips) at its gate as well as at all purchase centers. Some other mills have also begun similar open weighing practices at multiple procurement centers.
In the district, sugarcane is cultivated over approximately 2.55 lakh hectares. To process this crop, there are ten sugar mills along with hundreds of power crushers and traditional units operating in the area. General Manager (Cane) of Bijnor Sugar Mill, Shishpal Singh, stated that the mill will continue operations until all the sugarcane in its area is crushed, and it is expected to run until the last week of March.
Rahul Chaudhary, General Manager (Cane) of Bilai Sugar Mill, said that the mill has so far crushed 80.50 lakh quintals of sugarcane. In the previous season, it had crushed 1 crore 4.62 lakh quintals. He added that the mill will shut only after crushing all the available cane in its area. The mill has already started open weighing of sugarcane—without slips—at both its gate and procurement centers.
